YAP 2013: bam! Debuts ‘He’ at MAXXI - Italy

He has made his debut in the MAXXI piazza. As the winner of the Young Architects Program (YAP) in Rome, Turin-based studio Bam! Bottega di Architettura metropolitan has transformed the concrete facade of the Zaha Hadid-designed museum into a visual spectacular with the installation of a yellow, translucent and aerostatic prism.

By casting a mesmerizing, yellow shadow on the grass and a surrounding wooden platform, He has provided a structureless summer refuge for visitors. During the day, water slowly seeps from the volume’s edges to provide a curtain of mist that cools and delineates the public space below. As night falls, the water is replaced by light to create a “luminous and evocative lantern” capable of hosting a range of outdoor events.

“I believe that the strength of this year’s winning YAP MAXXI project again lies in the experimental and innovative approach to the theme of public space. A dialogue with the great building by Zaha Hadid played out on the poetic and evocative level, thanks to a playful, impalpable installation capable of donating wellbeing to visitors and a new skyline to the Museum piazza”, says Margherita Guccione, Director of MAXXI Architettura.
